In this Google Cloud course you learn how resources, data services and identities fit together in Google Cloud and how to set up a clean environment. It is aimed at beginners in IT, development, data analysis and project management who are introducing or evaluating Google Cloud. You work with organisation, folders and projects, Compute Engine, Cloud Storage, BigQuery, IAM and billing. The course teaches terms and practice so you can hold confident conversations with teams and service providers.
What you’ll take away.
- Structure organisation, folders, projects and billing accounts sensibly
- Place Compute Engine, Cloud Run and Google Kubernetes Engine by use case
- Select Cloud Storage, Cloud SQL and BigQuery for suitable data types
- Control access with IAM roles, service accounts and the principle of least privilege
- Create resources with the console and the gcloud CLI and keep costs in check with budgets
Your training in detail
- Who is it for?
- Beginners from IT, development, data analysis, project management and consulting who want to get to know or introduce Google Cloud.
- Prerequisites
- A basic understanding of IT, networking and databases. Programming skills are not required. A Google Cloud test account is needed for exercises.
- Format & planning
- Suggested format: 2 days live online or on site. Scope depends on prior knowledge.
Agenda: from understanding to application
Our independently developed agenda proposal. Focus areas, lab environment and scope are agreed before booking.
Structure: universe, regions and zones, projects with project ID and number, the resource hierarchy and billing accounts.
Identity and access: Cloud Identity, IAM roles and policies, inheritance in the hierarchy, service accounts and organisation policies.
Compute: Compute Engine, instance templates, Cloud Run, App Engine and Google Kubernetes Engine compared.
Storage and networking: Cloud Storage with storage classes, persistent disks, VPC networks, firewall rules and Cloud Load Balancing.
Data: Cloud SQL, Spanner, Firestore, BigQuery for analytics, Pub/Sub for events and the path from raw data to a report.
Operations: Cloud Monitoring and Logging, budgets and alerts, the gcloud CLI, Terraform as a pointer to infrastructure as code, and cost models.
Suggested exercise: You create a project with a budget alert, upload a CSV file to Cloud Storage, import it into BigQuery and analyse it with a SQL query.

Frequently asked questions
What is a project in Google Cloud?
A project is the basic unit that holds resources such as VMs, buckets and databases. Each project has a name, an ID and a number and is linked to a billing account. Projects belong to the organisation rather than to individuals, so they remain when staff change.
What is BigQuery used for?
BigQuery is Google Cloud's data warehouse for analysing large data volumes with SQL. You do not manage servers, and billing depends on storage and queries. It suits analysis and reporting, less so many small transactions, for which Cloud SQL or Spanner fit better.
Do I need programming skills to start with Google Cloud?
Not for this course. You work mainly with the console and a few gcloud commands. SQL knowledge helps with BigQuery, and networking basics help with setup. If you later want to develop applications, you can build on these foundations with Cloud Run or Kubernetes.
Does Google Cloud fundamentals include a certificate?
