This Java training teaches object-oriented programming with current Java from the ground up and ends with a small tested application. It is meant for people entering software development, switchers from scripting languages and specialists who need to read and change Java code. You write classes, use collections and streams, handle errors with exceptions and meet Maven and JUnit, so your code is built and checked in a repeatable way.
What you’ll take away.
- Model classes, objects, inheritance and interfaces sensibly
- Choose collections such as List, Map and Set to suit the task
- Filter and transform data with streams and lambda expressions
- Handle errors with exceptions and test code with JUnit
- Set up and build a project with Maven and debug it in an IDE
Your training in detail
- Who is it for?
- Newcomers to software development, switchers from other languages and specialists who maintain existing Java code.
- Prerequisites
- No Java knowledge needed. Logical thinking and a basic idea of variables and loops help.
- Format & planning
- Suggested format: 4 to 5 days live online or on site. Scope depends on prior knowledge.
Agenda: from understanding to application
Our independently developed agenda proposal. Focus areas, lab environment and scope are agreed before booking.
Getting started: installing the JDK, javac and java, class structure, primitive types, strings and control structures.
Object orientation: constructors, encapsulation, inheritance, abstract classes, interfaces, records and enums.
Collections and generics: ArrayList, HashMap, HashSet, sorting with Comparator and the basics of equals and hashCode.
Functional style: lambda expressions, the Stream API, Optional and dealing with null.
Errors and files: checked and unchecked exceptions, try-with-resources, file access with java.nio and logging.
Project practice: Maven with pom.xml, package structure, tests with JUnit 5 and debugging in IntelliJ IDEA or Eclipse.
Suggested exercise: model a library system with books, members and loans, read data from a CSV file, analyse it with streams and cover it with JUnit.

Frequently asked questions
Is Java suitable as a first programming language?
Yes. Java is strictly typed and reports many mistakes at compile time, which helps when learning. The start demands a little more structure than scripting languages, such as classes and types. In return you learn concepts that transfer to many other languages.
Which Java version and JDK are used?
We work with a current long-term-support version of the JDK, usually from OpenJDK-based distributions. We agree the exact one beforehand to match your environment, so exercises fit your production systems. For older projects we can also discuss features of earlier versions.
Java or Python: which suits my goal?
Java fits if you maintain enterprise applications, Android-related tooling or large long-lived backends. Python is often quicker for scripts, data analysis and automation. What matters is the code in your environment. Send us an example from your daily work and we will suggest a path.
Does Java development include a certificate?
Oracle offers Java SE certifications. Which exam matches the current Java version should be checked with Oracle directly. Exam fees and licences are only included if confirmed in the offer. Attending alone awards no vendor certification.
