Tableau & visualisation

Tableau training: connect data, choose the right visualisation, build interactive dashboards and present results to colleagues and management.

In this Tableau course you learn to connect data, choose suitable charts and build interactive dashboards from them. It is aimed at analysts, controllers and business users who are moving reports from Excel or databases to a visualisation tool. You work with data sources, dimensions and measures, calculated fields, filters, parameters and dashboard actions. You also practise designing results so that decision makers see the key message at once, and publishing a dashboard sensibly.

Tableau (Salesforce)

Your training in detail

Who is it for?
Analysts, controllers, marketing and sales analysts and business users who present metrics visually.
Prerequisites
Good Excel skills and an understanding of metrics. SQL basics are helpful. Tableau Desktop or another access route should be available.
Format & planning
Suggested format: 2 to 3 days live online or on site. Scope depends on prior knowledge.

Agenda: from understanding to application

Our independently developed agenda proposal. Focus areas, lab environment and scope are agreed before booking.

  1. Data connections: Excel, CSV and databases, relationships and joins in the data model, extract versus live connection.

  2. View basics: dimensions and measures, rows and columns shelves, marks, sorting, groups and hierarchies.

  3. Choosing visualisations: when bars, lines, heatmaps, maps or scatter plots fit, and how to use colour sparingly and accessibly.

  4. Calculations: calculated fields, table calculations, FIXED LOD expressions, parameters and date functions.

  5. Dashboards: layout containers, filter actions, highlighting, tooltips, stories and adapting to different screen sizes.

  6. Publishing: Tableau Cloud or Server, permissions, refresh schedules and tips for tuning workbook performance.

PRACTICE & TRANSFER

Suggested exercise: You build a sales dashboard with revenue by region, a time trend and top products, where clicking a region filters all views.

Frequently asked questions

Tableau or Power BI: which tool suits me?

Both build dashboards from many data sources. Power BI fits closely into Microsoft environments, while Tableau is regarded as flexible for free-form visualisation. Existing licences, data sources and team skills usually decide. The principles of good dashboard design carry over to both tools.

Do I need SQL skills for Tableau?

Not necessarily, as Tableau connects to files and databases through its interface. SQL does help you understand data models, check joins and use custom queries as a source. If you work with databases often, it is worth taking the SQL course first.

What are LOD expressions in Tableau?

LOD stands for level of detail. With FIXED, INCLUDE and EXCLUDE you calculate metrics at a different level of detail than the current view, for example revenue per customer while the chart shows regions. They are the key to shares, cohorts and benchmark values.

Does Tableau & visualisation include a certificate?

Tableau offers its own certifications. Check the current exams and content on the Tableau website, as we could not confirm them conclusively here. Fees are only included if confirmed in the offer. Attending alone does not award a vendor certification.
