AWS cloud fundamentals

AWS fundamentals training: understand cloud concepts, core services such as EC2, S3 and IAM, and cost and security under the shared responsibility model.

In this AWS course you learn the basics of the Amazon cloud: how it is built, which core services exist and how cost and security fit together. It is aimed at beginners in IT, sales, project management and procurement who take part in cloud discussions or prepare first workloads. You get to know Regions and Availability Zones, work with EC2, S3, VPC and IAM, and learn the shared responsibility model and pricing principles. The content matches the entry level of AWS topics.

Your training in detail

Who is it for?
Beginners from IT, sales, project and product management, procurement and engineering who want to understand AWS and use first services.
Prerequisites
A basic understanding of IT, networking and servers. Programming training is not required. An AWS test account is needed for the exercises.
Format & planning
Suggested format: 2 days live online or on site. Scope depends on prior knowledge.

Agenda: from understanding to application

Our independently developed agenda proposal. Focus areas, lab environment and scope are agreed before booking.

  1. Cloud basics: advantages over an own data centre, IaaS, PaaS and SaaS service models, Regions, Availability Zones and edge locations.

  2. Compute: EC2 instance types, AMIs, Auto Scaling, Elastic Load Balancing and Lambda as a serverless alternative.

  3. Storage and databases: S3 storage classes, EBS, EFS, RDS, DynamoDB and choosing between object, block and file storage.

  4. Networking: VPC, subnets, security groups, internet gateway, Route 53 and CloudFront in overview.

  5. Security: IAM users, roles and policies, MFA, shared responsibility, CloudTrail, encryption with KMS and compliance offerings.

  6. Cost and operations: on-demand, Reserved Instances and Savings Plans, Cost Explorer, budgets, support plans and CloudWatch.

PRACTICE & TRANSFER

Suggested exercise: You launch an EC2 instance, create an S3 bucket with restricted access, assign an IAM role and set up a budget with an alert.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need cloud experience to start with AWS?

No. You should, however, be able to place basic terms such as server, network and database. The course explains cloud concepts from the ground up and shows how they appear in AWS services. Programming skills are not needed.

What does the shared responsibility model mean in AWS?

AWS is responsible for security of the cloud, meaning data centres, hardware and foundation services. You are responsible for security in the cloud: access rights, configuration, data and encryption. The split depends on the service, and with EC2 you carry more responsibility than with S3.

How do I avoid unexpected costs in AWS?

Set up a budget with an alert early, apply tags for cost allocation and shut down unused resources such as running instances or idle volumes. Cost Explorer shows which service drives spend. In the course you practise these steps in a test account.

Does AWS cloud fundamentals include a certificate?

The related exam is AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner. Fees and exam booking are only included if confirmed in the offer. Attending alone does not award a vendor certification.
