Kubernetes

Kubernetes training: run workloads with Deployments, understand cluster components and secure deployments with RBAC, NetworkPolicy and Pod Security.

In this Kubernetes course you learn to run applications in a cluster, understand the architecture and secure deployments. It is aimed at administrators, DevOps engineers and developers who already know containers and want to run workloads in production. You work with Pods, Deployments, Services, Ingress, ConfigMaps, Secrets, storage, RBAC and NetworkPolicies, as well as kubectl and troubleshooting in the cluster. The exercises run in a test environment that we agree with you.

What you’ll take away.

  • Explain the components of the control plane and worker nodes and how they interact
  • Deploy, scale and update applications with Deployments, Services and Ingress
  • Separate configuration and credentials with ConfigMaps and Secrets and keep data on PersistentVolumes
  • Restrict access with RBAC, Pod Security Standards and NetworkPolicies
  • Isolate faults systematically with kubectl describe, logs, events and probes

Your training in detail

Who is it for?
Administrators, DevOps engineers, platform teams and developers who run or deploy applications on Kubernetes.
Prerequisites
Docker knowledge or comparable container experience, the Linux command line and networking basics. YAML should be familiar to you.
Format & planning
Suggested format: 3 to 4 days live online or on site. Scope depends on prior knowledge.

Agenda: from understanding to application

Our independently developed agenda proposal. Focus areas, lab environment and scope are agreed before booking.

  1. Architecture: API server, etcd, scheduler, controller manager, kubelet, container runtime and the desired-state principle.

  2. Workloads: Pods, ReplicaSets, Deployments, rolling updates, rollbacks, Jobs, CronJobs, StatefulSets and DaemonSets.

  3. Networking: Services (ClusterIP, NodePort, LoadBalancer), Ingress and Gateway API, cluster DNS and the basics of Pod communication.

  4. Configuration and storage: ConfigMaps, Secrets, environment variables, volumes, PersistentVolumeClaims and StorageClasses.

  5. Security: RBAC with roles and bindings, ServiceAccounts, Pod Security Standards, NetworkPolicy, admission control and audit logs.

  6. Operations: resource requests and limits, probes, autoscaling, Helm for packaging, cluster upgrades and troubleshooting with kubectl.

PRACTICE & TRANSFER

Suggested exercise: You deploy a two-tier application with a Deployment, restrict database access with a NetworkPolicy and carry out a rolling update with rollback.

Frequently asked questions

What prior knowledge do I need for Kubernetes?

You should know containers, meaning you can build images and start containers with Docker. You also need the Linux command line, networking basics and YAML. Kubernetes itself is explained in the course starting from the architecture. If containers are new to you, begin with the Docker course.

What is the difference between a Pod, a Deployment and a Service?

A Pod is the smallest unit and runs one or more containers. A Deployment keeps the desired number of Pods running and manages updates and rollbacks. A Service gives a group of Pods a stable address, since individual Pods come and go.

How do I secure a Kubernetes cluster?

Begin with API access: RBAC with minimal rights, protected ServiceAccounts and TLS. Apply Pod Security Standards and NetworkPolicies and keep images up to date. Enable audit logging and follow the Kubernetes documentation's guidance. In the course you practise these steps hands on.

Does Kubernetes include a certificate?

The related hands-on exam is the Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) from the Linux Foundation. Exam fees are only included if confirmed in the offer. Attending alone does not award a vendor certification.
