Starting a career in IT

Starting a career in IT: compare roles such as software developer, systems integrator and support, build fundamentals and plan a realistic path.

This seminar on starting a career in IT helps you decide which role suits you, and it is aimed at school leavers, career changers and returners without an IT background. You get to know roles such as software development, systems integration, support, data and security, try out basics of hardware, networking and programming logic, and draw up a personal learning plan. We give no job promises, only well-founded orientation. Scope and focus are settled when you enquire.

What you’ll take away.

  • Distinguish roles such as IT specialist (application development, systems integration), support and data roles
  • Explain how a computer, operating system and network are built in plain words
  • Apply programming logic with variables, conditions and loops to small examples
  • Weigh routes such as apprenticeship, retraining, lateral entry and further training against each other

Your training in detail

Who is it for?
School leavers, career changers and returners who are considering IT and have not yet settled on a direction.
Prerequisites
None. You only need an interest in technology and willingness to try new things.
Format & planning
Suggested format: 2 days live online, split into modules. Scope depends on prior knowledge.

Agenda: from understanding to application

Our independently developed agenda proposal. Focus areas, lab environment and scope are agreed before booking.

  1. Overview of IT occupations: IT specialists in application development, systems integration, data and process analysis, and digital networking.

  2. Roles beyond the apprenticeship occupations such as service desk, cloud, data analysis, security and administration.

  3. Hardware and operating systems: processor, memory, file system, Windows and Linux compared.

  4. Networking basics with IP addresses, routers, DNS and the question of how a web page reaches the browser.

  5. First programming steps in Python with variables, conditions, loops and functions.

  6. Learning routes and applications: apprenticeship, retraining, further training, certificates, project portfolio and learning plan.

PRACTICE & TRANSFER

Suggested exercise: You write a small Python script, such as a wage calculator, and summarise your learning plan for the next six months on one page.

Frequently asked questions

Which IT role suits me if I do not want to program?

There are many routes without a programming focus: support, systems integration, network and system administration, data analysis or security. All involve some scripting, but rarely classic software development. In the seminar you compare these roles through typical tasks and find out what suits you.

Can I switch into IT without a degree?

Yes, many roles are open without a degree, for example through an apprenticeship, retraining or targeted further training backed by practical evidence. Demonstrable skills usually weigh more than the formal qualification. How quickly it works depends on region, prior experience and role. We cannot promise a job.

What is the difference between application development and systems integration?

IT specialists for application development design and program software. IT specialists for systems integration plan, install and maintain IT systems, networks and servers. The two share foundations but set different priorities in training and daily work. In the seminar you try something from both sides before committing.

Does Starting a career in IT include a certificate?

CompTIA Tech+ is a possible entry exam that tests IT fundamentals in a vendor-neutral way. Vocational qualifications such as IT specialist are examined by the chamber of commerce (IHK), not by us. Attending alone awards no certificate. Exam fees are only included if the offer confirms them.
