IT support & helpdesk

IT support training for beginners: narrow down faults systematically, document tickets cleanly and help users clearly at the helpdesk.

This IT support training shows you how to narrow down faults in a structured way at the helpdesk, document tickets so others can follow them and support users clearly. It is aimed at beginners and career changers in first and second-line support. You practise troubleshooting on Windows, networking and peripherals, prioritise tickets by impact and urgency, and write knowledge articles. No prior knowledge is needed. We shape the format to your team or career start when you enquire.

Your training in detail

Who is it for?
Beginners, career changers and staff moving into the helpdesk or on-site support.
Prerequisites
No formal prerequisites. Everyday use of Windows and office applications is helpful.
Format & planning
Suggested format: 3 days live online or on site, split into modules. Scope depends on prior knowledge.

Agenda: from understanding to application

Our independently developed agenda proposal. Focus areas, lab environment and scope are agreed before booking.

  1. The role of support with service desk, support tiers, incident versus service request and typical SLAs.

  2. Structured troubleshooting: capture the symptom, form a hypothesis, test, verify the fix.

  3. Windows diagnostics with Task Manager, Event Viewer, Device Manager, user accounts and password resets.

  4. Networking basics for support: IP configuration, DNS, DHCP, Wi-Fi issues, ping and tracert.

  5. Ticketing in practice with categories, prioritisation by impact and urgency, status changes and knowledge base.

  6. Communication and remote support: call handling, difficult callers, escalation and data protection in support.

PRACTICE & TRANSFER

Suggested exercise: You work through five prepared fault cases (no network, printer error, locked account, slow PC, email problem), document each as a ticket and write a knowledge article for one of them.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get into IT support without formal training?

Support is a typical entry point because employers often value hands-on skills and communication. Useful are solid Windows knowledge, networking basics and a clear way of handling tickets. A training gives you this base, but it does not guarantee a job. Applications that show concrete practice cases often work better than attendance confirmations alone.

What is the difference between an incident and a service request?

An incident is a disruption: something that should work does not. A service request is a request for something standard, such as a new mailbox or a software installation. Both usually run in the same ticketing tool, but with different workflows and deadlines. In the training you practise this distinction on examples.

Do I need CompTIA A+ for IT support?

No, it is not mandatory. Many employers accept experience, an apprenticeship or other proof. A+ is a vendor-neutral proof of foundational knowledge and can help in applications, especially without a formal qualification. Whether the effort pays off depends on your goal. This training does not prepare for it specifically.

Does IT support & helpdesk include a certificate?

A related qualification is CompTIA A+ with two exams (Core 1 and Core 2) covering hardware, networking, operating systems and security. This training is not A+ exam preparation, and attending alone awards no certificate. Exam fees are only included if the offer confirms them.
